Fruit Farming at Ibanda Farm

At Ibanda Farm, fruit farming is more than just growing produce — it’s about cultivating health, income, and sustainability from the soil up. Located in the fertile heart of Namulesa Village, near Busoga Growers off Kamuli Road, our fruit fields benefit from rich volcanic soils, a favorable climate, and a long tradition of small-scale horticulture in the region.

We are currently nurturing a growing variety of fruit crops, including bananas (matooke and dessert types), mangoes, passion fruits, pawpaws (papayas), guavas, jackfruit, and citrus. These fruits not only serve the local market with fresh, chemical-free produce but also support nutrition, income generation, and ecological balance within our mixed-farming model.

Why Fruit Farming Matters

Fruits are nature’s most complete foods — rich in vitamins, minerals, and natural sugars. By integrating fruit farming into our operations, we promote better diets, reduced food costs, and more diversified farm incomes. Our orchard is managed using organic compost, mulching, intercropping, and water conservation techniques, ensuring high-quality harvests without harming the environment.

Fruit farming also:

  • Provides shade and windbreaks for other crops and livestock

  • Reduces soil erosion and improves biodiversity

  • Supplies surplus produce for juice, drying, and value-added processing

  • Offers daily income from fast-maturing crops like passion fruit

A Growing Orchard with a Vision

Our fruit farm is still expanding — guided by a vision to become a demonstration site for smallholder-friendly orchard models. We are planting with spacing, pruning, and soil enrichment techniques that can be replicated affordably by nearby farmers. This makes Ibanda not just a producer, but a center of learning.

Some of our fruits (like bananas and jackfruit) are grown for subsistence and bulk sales, while others (like mangoes and passion fruit) are targeted for export-quality standards. We believe in farming fruits that fit the land, feed the people, and generate sustainable income.

 Supporting the Community

Our fruit farming work doesn’t stop at the gate. We offer:

  • Seedlings and grafted fruit trees to neighbors and schools

  • Training on pruning, pest control, and post-harvest handling

  • Community harvest days and fruit donation drives
