Dairy Production at Ibanda Farm

Dairy production is a growing pillar of Ibanda Farm’s vision for food security, community nutrition, and rural empowerment. Nestled in Namulesa Village, near Busoga Growers off Kamuli Road, our farm leverages the region’s lush pastures and deep agricultural heritage to raise productive, well-nurtured dairy cattle that serve both subsistence and commercial purposes.

At Ibanda, we see dairy not just as milk — but as a gateway to improved livelihoods. From daily household nutrition to school feeding programs, and from manure for crops to market-ready value-added products like yogurt and ghee, our dairy enterprise is carefully designed to deliver impact across multiple layers of community life.

What We Produce

We primarily focus on high-yielding dairy breeds, such as Friesians and crossbreeds, that perform well in Uganda’s climate when managed correctly. Our cows are fed a balanced, nutrient-rich diet, supplemented by on-farm fodder, maize bran, and mineral licks — ensuring steady milk production throughout the year.

We produce:

  • Fresh raw milk for local sale and home use

  • Pasteurized milk for institutions and small vendors

  • Yogurt and ghee (under development for small-scale processing)

  • Organic manure from cow dung to fertilize our fields

Why Dairy Matters

Dairy farming is one of the few agricultural enterprises that provides daily income, making it a lifeline for rural families. At Ibanda, we promote dairy because it:

  • Improves child and maternal nutrition through milk access

  • Generates income every day, not just seasonally

  • Provides manure for crop production and soil health

  • Empowers women and youth who often manage milk sales

  • 🐄 Supports sustainable mixed farming when integrated with crops

How We Do It

We manage our dairy operations with a focus on animal welfare, hygiene, and productivity:

  • Comfortable housing with proper ventilation and bedding

  • Regular veterinary care, deworming, and vaccination schedules

  • Rotational grazing and silage preparation for dry seasons

  • Clean milking practices to ensure safe, high-quality milk

  • Record-keeping to track each cow’s health and milk output

We also train nearby farmers on zero-grazing, calf management, and feed formulation — creating a ripple effect of improved dairy practices in the area.

 Building a Dairy Ecosystem

We are developing Ibanda Farm into a hub for dairy learning and access, where local farmers can:

  • Buy healthy dairy calves and heifers

  • Access training in animal husbandry

  • Connect with milk buyers and input suppliers

  • Learn about low-cost dairy housing and feeding innovations
